ED CEO & C-Level Position Announcements

Thank you!

A Message from the Executive Director

Dear Members,

There is only a little over 2 weeks before the 14th Washington State Nonprofit Conference. It is an exciting time here at EA. We have over 500 people attending. There are 40 exhibitors showcasing their innovative products and services. Of course this conference is possible because of all the people who come together to help plan and organize the best possible conference for you.

Volunteers include CJ Dorgeloh, Susie Burdick (Hearing Speech Deafness Center), Juliet Eleveld (Nancy Bell Evans Center on Nonprofits & Philanthropy Daniel J Evans School of Public Affairs, University of Washington), Kasa Tupua & Danielle Potter (Seattle University Master of Public Administration & Executive Master of Nonprofit Leadership), Lee Harper (Northshore Senior Center), Mike Hatzenbeler (Provail); Renee Mona & Muriel Dance (Antioch University), Daniel Wiebe (HomeStreet Bank), Grace Chien (Girl Scouts of Western Washington), Putnam Barber (Idealist), Beth Minkler (Solid Ground), and Keith Everett. Special thanks to Mike Bisesi, Seattle University and Steve Smith, University of Washington for their support.

Each year Executive Alliance hosts a Town Hall meeting where we solicit from our members what are the public policy that are important to you. This year’s event is being held on April 22nd featuring former Mayor Norm Rice as our keynote speaker.  For more detail information click here.

Our recent co-sponsored with Pacific Continental Bank Cash Flow Workshop was a success. Participants were given helpful tips and tricks on managing our finances using cash flow spreadsheets. Thank you to Kathe Shaw Bassett for arranging this excellent program.

The Minority Executive Directors Coalition is holding another of their 2-day Cultural Competency Workshop on April 17 & 18. This interactive 2-day training workshop integrates anti-racism work with cultural competency, setting a foundation for understanding cultural competency through a social justice lens. Program Updates

Public Policy

We want your input on the issues facing the nonprofit community in King County, the Puget Sound Region, Washington State.

Executive Alliance is hosting a Town Hall Meeting on Tuesday, April 22nd 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the 2100 Building.  During this Town Hall meeting nonprofits representatives from the Puget Sound Region will come together and share what their concerns are.  EA will gather this input and present it at the National Council of Nonprofit Associations (NCNA) Congress in June.  EA has secured former Seattle Mayor Norm Rice to open the meeting speaking about the importance of nonprofits to our communities.  As an active member with the NCNA, EA participates with a network of state and regional nonprofit associations serving over 20,000 members in 41 states. NCNA works to link local organizations to a national audience.  Please come and join us at the Town Hall meeting and have your voice heard! For more information go to Town Hall meeting.

Click here to make your reservation for the April 22nd Town Hall Meeting.

On February 20, 2008, EA sent a letter to the Attorney General (AG), Rob McKenna’s office about concerns over HB 1114; the 2007 bill concerning the marketing of estate distribution documents, and its potential impact on nonprofits’ ability to consult with potential donors.    While EA understands and applauds the effort to crack down on unethical practices, we are concerned that the language of the statute may have some unintended consequences for legitimate nonprofit organizations and their charitable giving officers. EA requested guidance from the AG in interpreting HB1114 and the impact it will have on the nonprofit sectors efforts to introduce new donors to the charitable opportunities available in financial and estate planning.  EA looks forward to the AG’s response and will update our EA members as soon as we can.

If you are impacted by the Employee Hour Tax or ‘Head’ Tax for companies with employees working in Seattle check the EA website for more information and the computation worksheet: http://www.exec-alliance.org/documents/Headtax2jan.pdf

SENATE BILL 6829 concerning the increase of individual raffle ticket prices from $25 to $100 passed the House and moved on to the Senate.  On 01/25/08 the bill was referred to Committee on Labor, Commerce, Research and Development.  EA will keep you informed of its progress through the Senate.

We are continuing to move ahead with our partnership with the Prosperity Partnership with our work on Housing, Taxes and Board & Commissions.

NP3 - Housing

The Nonprofit Partners for Prosperity Housing Committee (NP3-H), chaired by Carla Okigwe, Housing Development Consortium, develops affordable housing priorities from the perspective of the nonprofit sector and gives input to the Prosperity Partnership’s housing agenda.

The Prosperity Partnership last year set up a Regional Housing Work Group to give comments on the Puget Sound Regional Council’s draft Vision 2040 Plan and to develop consensus strategies to increase affordable housing throughout the four-county region.  The Work Group consists of representatives from the for-profit building industry, nonprofit low income housing, civic and business leaders, and government, and is staffed by the PSRC.  The Work Group has two subcommittees – (1) to promote affordable housing strategies and give technical assistance to local governments and (2) to implement the Work Group’s selected state legislative priorities.

The work of NP3-H has ensured nonprofit representation on the Work Group and its two subcommittees and has been active in ensuring that the nonprofit voice is heard in this initiative.  We’re currently gearing up to develop our 2009 legislative priorities and work plan.  For more information on this committee, contact jtrupin@exec-alliance.org.

There a a number of opportunities on various Board & Commissions coming up in the next few months. If you are interested in applying for any of these, click on the link below and also let Jessica Trupin know of your interest so that we can send a letter of support.

Survey and Database Project underway at Historic Seattle

Historic Seattle, a nonprofit organization dedicated to architectural preservation, is developing a database catalog highlighting the historic and heritage preservation themed collections of books, periodicals, photographs, reports, etc. maintained by public libraries, historical associations, colleges and universities, city government and regional archives and museums throughout the Pacific Northwest.

Through funding from King County’s 4Culture, the database catalog will be accessible to everyone electronically via Historic Seattle’s website, www.historicseattle.org.  It will provide a singular access point to the vast historic collections stewarded by numerous organizations throughout the area.

In order to create the database, a survey was developed and sent to 280 organizations throughout Washington and Oregon on March 12, 2008.  The nineteen question survey asks for specific information regarding each organization and the collections they manage.  The database created with the survey results will help all institutions regardless of size become part of a cooperative community of organizations emphasizing and providing accessibility to the rich historic preservation themed collections in the Pacific Northwest.

For more information regarding this project please contact Kji Kelly at Historic Seattle, kjik@historicseattle.org.

Puget Sound Partnership hosts Topic Forums

The Puget Sound Partnership is building an Action Agenda to guide Puget Sound protection and restoration. To help shape the Action Agenda, the Partnership is hosting five topic forums beginning in April, based on each of the Partnership's ecosystem goals.

  • Review Sound-wide status and threats analyses
  • Discuss our technical understanding of the problem
  • Identify policy strategies needed to achieve a healthy Puget Sound

Who should attend? People attending the forums should be able to share their scientific and policy expertise in the topic areas. The meetings are open to the public.

How can I prepare? Please review the topic forum FAQ for more information about the topic forum process. Detailed materials developed for each forum will be posted on the Partnership Web site on or before April 14. If you cannot attend a forum, comments can be submitted electronically by May 6.
